19 Days Left...

Time is in a rather odd state for me right now: it is going by both quickly and slowly at the same time. At least, every day feels like time is going by so slowly, and then before I realize it, it's over, and I'm one day closer to leaving.

I've definitely been finding myself taking the time to appreciate everything around me more fully. Getting a new camera gives me an awesome excuse to spend a lot of time taking pictures of my pets; especially when I realize that, by the time I return home (assuming I do), most of them will have probably passed on (or maybe not, they are rather stubbornly healthy animals). It's the thought, though, that I may never conceivably see my pets again that makes it hardest to just pack up and leave, especially when I consider that some of these animals have been my friends for over 10 years of my life.

But those are depressing thoughts, so I'll go ahead, and for lack of anything else to really write about, post cute pictures of my fluffy companions. If that's one thing that's gone truly global in the internet age, it's definitely the posting of cute pet pictures. (And just a forewarning: I accidentally took the first three photos at 20 megapixels.... so they are on the large side.)

It's summer time, the dogs' favorite time of year. They're all swimming fanatics--the little Yorkie puppy even kept on swimming through all of last winter. And the silver Bengal can be coaxed into swimming in the pool, too, and since he hasn't killed us in our sleep yet, he probably enjoys it.

And I'll throw in this funny little video about pets and packing, because it seems oddly relevant. (Or else I'm truly grasping at straws right now for things to post about!)

Autumn Leaves and Castle Cats

Here's a bunch of long overdue photos from the last two weeks! The autumn leaves have been absolutely stunning! The mountainsides are turning all sorts of colors, which makes them even more stunning than usual. I did my best to photograph the one that you can see from Shirasagi's garden, which is right outside of my apartment. The leaves are finally starting to fall from most of the trees these days, but the colors were beautiful while they lasted! Below are a bunch of photos of the bike paths next to the Himeji Castle Moat, which were surrounded by trees in stunning shades of red and gold. This is definitely the scenic route to get to downtown in Himeji! Unfortunately, I'm still not quite sure of all of the twists and turns through neighborhoods that it involves to get to the back entrance of this pathway, but once I'm on it I can orient myself via the castle.  This area is always full of joggers, bikers, and... cats. Stray cats, for t...

Cherry Blossom Season at Nagoyama Temple!

I haven't been to Nagoyama Temple in awhile, but today was a beautiful sunny day, and since it's about 10 minutes away by bicycle, I couldn't resist! Nagoyama is absolutely stunning during cherry blossom season! I know everyone crowds into Himeji Castle for cherry blossom viewing, but I definitely think Nagoyama's cherry trees are of comparable beauty; perhaps some might find the idea of flower viewing in a cemetery depressing, but wow, this is probably the most beautiful cemetery I have ever seen! Also, there were cats everywhere. Would they be considered temple cats or graveyard cats? Can you spot Himeji Castle (in its scaffolding)? The cemetery extends for quite a ways around the main temple, and there were cherry trees everywhere!  A small garden nestled between the hills of graves. You can see the city stretching out behind it! I love how, at certain angles, the main temple seems to float above a sea of cherry trees.  ...

Foggy Day on Yoshino Mountain!

Yoshino Mountain is located in Nara Prefecture, and it is often considered one of the best places in Japan to see cherry blossoms. It takes about three hours and multiple train connections to get there from Himeji, which means that if you leave early enough, it's day-trip doable. I went there last weekend, on the 11th of April. The temperature was warm, but the weather alternated between foggy and cloudy. The trails were quite muddy due to the rainy days all of the week prior, but the views were still stunning! The trees were in various stages of losing their blossoms, so with each gust of wind petals were knocked off and blown about, creating a snowy impression. I wish I could have seen it on a sunny day, with the blossoms at their peak! I did my best to photograph the beautiful cherry-covered slopes during my hike, but the fog mutes the bright colors of the blossoms. New cherry leaves grow in with an orange-red color, which combined with the lingering pink and white blossoms c...
